Can you believe we are nearing the end of 2017?! And as one year begins to wind up the anticipation of a new one begins to take shape.

Whether you follow trends or prefer to create your own, a lot of inspiration can be found from tapping in to the best of what is to come:

Here are some of our favourite trends for 2017/2018:

1. Natural & earthy

While the ‘earthy and natural’ look is by no means a new thing, it’s still good to know that come next year, investing in natural fibres and textures is still an investment well made. From lighting to cushions expect to see more wood, stone and woven pieces in stores.

a. Matabi cushion $59.99 by Nood | b. Queen style bed w/ side shelves $3795 by Forest Furniture | c. Armidale table lamp $179 by Freedom Furniture | d. General Elclectic vase $27.90 by The Bed Shop | e. Metisse soap dispenser $16.95 by Freedom Furniture

2. Curved furniture

It’s a little art deco with a modern twist. If you’re in line for a new sofa or coffee table you may find yourself drawn to curved lines and soft edges. The curved look is a nice change from the straight and angular furniture pieces we’re so used to seeing and yet it’s not so out there that you couldn’t love the look for years to come.

a. Anika recliner $POA by La-Z-boy | b. Ander side table $879 by Hunter Furniture | c. Aria 3 seater $1999 by Nood | d. Lunette dining chair $159 by Nood

3. Ceramics and coloured glass

Sculptural ceramics and coloured glass vases are a great way to szhoosh up a shelf or table. The beauty of an intriguing vase is that it can be displayed with or without flowers and still draw plenty of interest. Expect to see both ceramics and coloured glass making more of a presence in pendant lighting and table lamps too.

4. Rich reds

Showstopping and instantly warming. Heading into the new year burnished oranges, terracotta and rich warm reds will be your go-to for creating a cosy and characterful space. If you prefer to gently add colour, soften with cream and taupe for a room that feels both calm and vibrant, perfect for Summer.

a. Antique Dongbei Buffet $2695 by The Importer | b. Kas Ikat cushion $29.99 by Briscoes | c. Azrou floor rug $429 by Freedom Furniture | d. Gilmour couch $6374 by Hunter Furniture

5. Brass

Every season there is a shiny surface that shines more than most. In previous years that surface was copper but expect to see copper taking a back seat to the new favourite, brass. While the idea of brass might have you picturing antiques and dusty attics, this texture can more than hold it’s own in modern settings too.

6. Dark wood

The dark side is coming. In furniture that is! While the Scandinavian look of light toned wood will still be easy enough to find, darker wood options will be vying for your attention too. From black table tops to dark oak wood cabinets, if you’re ready to make a change, don’t be surprised if that change is to the darker side.
