Experience and celebrate Matariki, the Maaori New Year, at The Base between June 6 - 30.
In Te Reo Maaori, Matariki is both the name of the Pleiades star cluster and also of the season of its first rising in early June, marking the beginning of a new year.

We're proud to bring you New Zealand's first Matariki infinity room experience. An infinity room is a dark room made with mirrors, giving visitors the sense of infinite space. In the infinity room, you'll be able to experience the Matariki cluster in the night sky and learn about each of the seven stars that make up the cluster, while listening to Taonga Puoro (traditional Maaori instruments) . The infinity room is perfect for about five or six people at a time, and is the perfect experience with friends or the whanau of all ages, cultures, and backgrounds to learn more about Matariki. It's a unique and relaxing experience - you don't want to miss it. You'll find the infinity room in the Atrium. BUSIT is also providing FREE buses for school children, teachers and parent helpers, so you can learn about Matariki.

Star Trail (Kids 3 - 12) 

Pick up your entry form and find the seven stars of Matariki dotted around Te Awa! Join the star scavenger hunt by visiting the customer service desk, collect the words to make the phrase, and take your form back to the customer service desk. Each completed hunt participant will get to choose their very own glow in the dark stars to create Matariki in their bedroom, or a toy kaleidoscope, while stocks last**.
