Little women is based off the classic novel written by the author Louisa May Alcott, first published in 1868.

It is set during the American civil war and loosely based off the town Concord in Massachusetts following the four March sisters Amy, Jo, Beth and Meg and their lives as they grow from children to little women.

This film is the eighth film adaptation and features an impressive cast with Emma Watson (Meg), Meryl Streep (Aunt March), Saoirse Ronan (Jo), Timothee Chalamet (Laurie), Florench Pugh (Amy) and Laura Dern (Mary March).

The film although following the same premise has its own unique style of telling the story with a more contemporary feel then the previous 1994 version that will keep those new to the story of Little Women  and even the most devoted of fans happy and entertained.

The film jumps straight in to a grown up Jo working at a boarding house in New York, cutting back and forth between the current time and the March girls growing up.

This element helps to keep things interesting and I found it engaging as even though I knew the story I still felt like I was kept guessing about what was going to happen.

Each March sister has their own unique personality and talents. The film follows themes that transcend time and are universal to girls of any time period.

The sisters are self-sufficient and full of personality and as the Eurythmics and Aretha Franklin once said “sisters are doin’ it for themselves”.

Little Women is now playing in theatres. Grab your sisters this holiday, and enjoy this timeless classic together!
