HOW TO SHOP LIKE A STYLIST

Shopping can be an overwhelming experience for people, especially if there are so many awesome stores within a shopping centre to choose from.

That’s where I come in as a personal stylist and style coach. My job is to give clients direction, help them shop more effeciently and effectively so they can make the best purchasing decsions they can.

Now there are a few insider secrets we use in the industry to help with this, and I’m going to share them with you!

Hopefully these little tips will make hitting the shops more fun, less stressful and more lucrative for your everyday style!

TIP #1 – WRITE A LIST BEFORE YOU GO SHOPPING

You don’t grocery shop without a list right? So why would you hit the clothing stores without a list?

When we shop with a list we are more focused (we know what we are looking for and don’t get as easily distracted), we are more effective (we aren’t just wasting time wandering around aimlessly), and we save money (yep! No more buying another pair of black pants when we have three already!)

How to WRITE your list;

  •  Clean out your wardrobe so you know what you ALREADY own!
  •  Work out what needs replacing.
  •  Work out what you need to fill the gaps (do you have lots of tops and need bottoms?)
  •  What new styles do you want to try?

TIP #2 - ANY NEW PURCHASES HAVE TO GO WITH 3 THINGS YOU ALREADY OWN

Do you have a wardrobe full of clothes that you don’t wear? THIS is probably one of the reasons why!

Having an effective wardrobe is about having versatile pieces that you can wear in different ways.

This is a really good rule to make sure you  BUY SMART, so if you like something, can you actually think of three things you have at home that it will work with (or three ways to wear it)?

TIP #3 – DOES IT “BLOW YOUR HAIR BACK?”

There is no point buying something if all you feel is “this will do”.  This is often how you end up making purchases that just sit in your wardrobe with the tag still on for ages.

As soon as you take it home, it looses any sort of excitement or newness so you have to love love love love it in the store.

You should feel amazing in everything that you own, so if you stick to this rule, getting dressed in the morning becomes a whole lot easier!

TIP #4 – IF YOU WOULDN’T PAY FULL PRICE FOR IT, DON’T BUY IT ON SALE

I know that everyone loves a bargain (me included) but if you are JUST buying it because it’s on sale, don’t.

The sale price should just be the bonus on top of finding an awesome piece that you really love (and need!)

You’re not actually ‘saving” $40, you’re still spending $50! You’re much better off saving that $50 and putting it towards something you really love that might cost $100, but you’ll get much more use out of!

TIP #5 – IF YOU AREN’T SURE, WALK AWAY

You don’t have to buy every single thing you see! If there is something that you aren’t 100% on, then walk away.

You’ll either totally forget about it as soon as you leave the store, or it will keep playing on your mind, and in that case, go back and get it!

You want to have an easy, fun experience when you shop, and if you follow these tips, I promise it will be!

So there you have it; some insider info on how to make the most of your next trip to our shopping centre!

Until Next Time, Happy Shopping
