SKINCARE FOR THE COOLER MONTHS | SYLVIA PARK

Lifestyle

19 May 2022

As the season changes and we head into the colder months, it’s time to level up your skincare game. Think about it – we have different needs as the weather changes. We add coats and knitwear to our daily wardrobe to keep warm, we eat seasonal produce more, we even switch our coffee from iced to hot. Our skin is no different. It needs different things as the weather conditions change. Sure, the basics are still the same – cleanse, tone, serum, eye cream, moisturise – but consider switching up the products and ingredients you use in the cooler months. Here are my top skincare tips for this season:

Hydration, hydration, hydration

It’s recommended we drink a certain amount of water daily for a reason. Hydration is key and more so in the winter when the weather conditions tend to be harsher on the skin because cold, windy air can be quite drying. Keep up the hydration by switching to moisturisers that are thicker and heavier than the ones you use in the warmer months to ensure that your skin is hydrated. Try and look for products with Hyaluronic Acid in your serums and moisturisers. Oh, and don’t forget to double up on the moisturiser on your body too!

Try these:

Mask up

No, not that kind of mask! A facial mask is something I use at least once a week. It’s an extra treat for the skin that targets different concerns and skin conditions. As a general rule of thumb, I like to go for masks that are non-drying and won’t strip away the oils from my skin. Pop one on, sip a lovely cup of tea, and put your feet up while the mask does its magic!

Sunscreen is still king

While the ‘wear sunscreen’ messaging isn’t as strong as it is during the summertime, that doesn’t mean you completely remove it from your morning beauty routine. The harmful effects of being exposed to the sun are still there, so now is not the time to skip sunscreen. Luckily there’s a wide range of sunscreen options so we’re not stuck with thick formulations that leave an unwanted white caste on our face. The innovation that sunscreen products now possess is great so no more excuses not to wear it!

Mirror, mirror

Adding the right things to your skincare toolkit makes all the difference. The great thing about investing in great tools is that you’ll be able to use them for a long time, not just in the cooler months. It’s not about having the fanciest, state of the art tools at home but rather having items that help you get more out of your skincare routine. I was amazed at how something as simple as adding a lighted mirror or a decent sized vanity mirror has improved my routine. I’m able to apply products to the harder to reach spots, I can use it to apply my eye-makeup better, and it creates the moodiest lighting when I do my evening skincare. Such a great addition to the vanity!

Expert Help

Skincare treatments were once reserved for the likes of celebrities and red carpet events but thankfully are now more accessible for you and me. Nowadays we can go to our favourite shopping centres and find a great range of expert options that can help us with our skin concerns or specialised treatments. Visiting a specialist also means that they can prescribe a more robust regime if you’re looking to up your skincare game in time for summer!
