MATTRESS MATTERS AND THINKING BEDROOMS

I heard something the other day that nearly had me barfing in my bed! The radio announcer was saying that the average mattress will double its weight in 10 years as a result of being filled with dead dust mites and their waste. What a horror story to awake to.

Google research quickly – and thankfully – revealed this is an urban myth that has been circulating for many years. However, it did get me thinking of mattresses and my need to replace ours. I discovered that if you’re serious about getting dust mites and other allergens out of your room, there are plenty of hypoallergenic mattresses on the market. Apparently, memory foam mattresses (and pillows) and latex mattresses, for instance, are too dense to appeal to home-making dust mites. Good to know. I also discovered that ten years is actually the tail-end of most high-end mattresses’ life expectancies. And, even if your mattress hasn’t yet reached that ripe old age, you may want to purchase a new one if your body shape or health has changed substantially.
