HAPPY HOLIDAYS | WESTGATE LIFESTYLE

School holidays. They’re eagerly anticipated by our school-aged children. While our young ones will undoubtedly have plotted some plans with their mates, it doesn’t hurt to have some activity ideas up your sleeve. Sometimes it’s just one purchase that can add a heck of a lot of fun and provide some wonderful school holiday memories.

I remember the time I bought one of my children a headlight (and yes, I found one at Rebel Sport), which proved perfect for sleepovers and games of Spotlight once it was dark enough. Another time, hours were spent having fun with modelling clay.

And so it was with a head full of such lovely memories that I went shopping for school holiday inspiration. Parents wanting to encourage their children to spend some of their holidays playing outside may well make a beeline for Rebel Sport where, of course, there are all sorts from balls to scooters. It could be the perfect time to purchase a table tennis table for years of fun for many – I found one for about $700 at Rebel Sport and know from experience it’s a great investment in family life. Also a goodie for a wide range of ages is the outdoor game Kubb, which is available at NOOD at a slashed price. Kubb has been elevated to “favourite game” by my family, ever since we discovered it two Christmas’ ago.

There’s certainly plenty of things to entertain the younger generation on inside days, which is a good thing as there are bound to be rainy days in the mix. There is a host of options in the arts, crafts, games and party sections of Warehouse Stationery, for example, including play dough, glow putty, 3D puzzles, board games, Jenga, and fabric felt pens. Take your children to Westgate Lifestyle and there’s a chance they may steer you towards Harvey Norman’s range of electronic toys such as the handheld PacMan console I have featured here (available at a hot price). If you think the holidays is time for an educational game, then Harvey Norman delivers on that front too – check out the maths wizard and magical workshop game on offer. It’s always excellent if children have the opportunity to learn through play.

School holidays are also a perfect time for sleepovers.  I’ve included a few items if your children want to zhuzh up their bedrooms for such an event (cute cushion, a poster and fairy lights in a twinkle star pattern – there are other options for all of these too and the prices are special).

There’s certainly no dearth of things to buy to get those holidays off to a good start or to keep the break interesting as you head into week two.  Good luck.
