CELEBRATING BLUE

Lifestyle

28 March 2019

The idea for this blog came to me 900m above sea level as I was cycling the Alps2Ocean trail, looking down on Lake Ohau.

Woman loving blue

The vista, during the trail, of the spectacular glacial lakes of Tekapo, Pukaki and Ohau just took my breath away. Never had the colour blue been so beautifully presented to me. How can this not be my favourite colour, is what I asked myself. It has been for scores of years, so I felt validated! I was biking on gloriously sunny days, so was seeing aqua and turquoise as I had never seen them before.

Post trip and back at my desk writing this I couldn’t help but seek blue product and make this blog a celebration of that magnificent hue. For an instance, the blue of the tea light holders I found in The Design Store transported me back to our beautiful South Island and Lake Pukaki. I think I’ll have to purchase those, as how wonderful it always is to look upon something that then triggers a great memory association. And, I even found a cushion, called Alpine, in the same store. Of course, my recent trip was bike-focused so I couldn’t resist including a bike in my mix of products (blue, of course) – that was product number one. Next stop was BabyCity as, for many, many years, the soft leather of Bobux pint-sized shoes has been my go-to baby present (well, either those or a book), and I knew I would find some blue pairs.

Beyond that, it was hardly difficult to find other delicious examples. Check out the patina of the oriental chest of drawers at The Importer, the smart navy of the throw from Freedom Now, and the layering of blue in the artwork from Freedom. It’s a beautiful colour and there are just so many examples of that in our stores. A quick internet search tells me that as well as being a cool and calming colour, it shows creativity and intelligence and symbolises loyalty, strength, wisdom and trust. Not a bad colour to be surrounded by, I say.
