A sign in my local post shop reminded me the other day that it’s the Year of the Pig according to the Chinese zodiac. But, when I go shopping and looking on-line I could swear it was the year of the flamingo.

Those beautiful birds are just popping up on all sorts of product at present. My neighbour has one as garden art, I have one as a watering can and as a print on a powder-blue nighty, and at Westgate Lifestyle they’re imprinted on all manner of things … on cushions, on canvas, on beach towels, beach bags and so on.

I actually found a whole host of critters while shopping this week. If flamingos don’t get your feathers flapping then how about monkeys or toucan (on cushions), frog (on a headlamp), woodland animals (on a duvet or sheets), or a zoo full of animals (in a sticker book). Sometimes such things make a perfect gift for our little people, or a pressie for a difficult-to-buy-for adult. The antelope head bookends may well be an option for he/she who has everything, and check out those cute doorstop options (owl, hedgehog, sheep…).

It’s a great time to shop, with plenty of sales to entice – the flamingo beach bag, for example, is only $9.99 at Briscoes and the doorstops are now half price at $12.40 at Bed Bath & Beyond. The price of the pink flamingo artwork from The Importer is also significantly reduced as are the antelope bookends from NOOD. Happy shopping.
