THIS SUMMER'S QUIRKIEST & MOST LOVABLE FILMEntertainment
08 February 2018
Our favourite films are often those that we can relate to on some level. The ones that make us laugh, cry and reminisce for days to come. This film does just that. Lady Bird stands out as one of the quirkiest and most lovable films to debut this summer.
College Professor: Lady Bird, is that your given name?
Christine McPherson: Yeah.
College Professor: Why is it in quotes?
Christine McPherson: I gave it to myself, it’s given to me by me.
Universal Pictures’ Lady Bird is a ‘no holds barred’ reflection on the ‘blunder years’ that most, if not all, teenagers go through. Captured in the most honest and cringeworthy ways, this film is truly unique and heartfelt. With two Golden Globe wins under its belt (best motion picture – musical or comedy and best actress – motion picture musical or comedy) as well as five Academy Award nominations, this film is hitting the spots of all audiences in exactly the right way.
Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson comes from a struggling middle class family in small town America, fiercely navigating (read: stumbling) her way through her final year of high school. Lady Bird forges her own path in life and breaks the mould of small town America where nothing is more than average. Lady Bird captures a slice of life and explores family drama, jealousy, popularity and all of the issues in between that teenagers traverse on a daily basis in this coming-of-age film that Time called “one of the top 10 films of the year”.
The wonderful directorial debut of Greta Gerwig takes us on a rollercoaster ride of emotions filled with offbeat sequences and odd characters that often push the boundaries of what is expected. Saoirse Ronan as Lady Bird is tremendous. Ronan delivers exceptional realism to her role, where life is just… Normal, making the film feel immensely genuine and real.
From the witty character dialogue to the masterful editing, it is a no-brainer as to why this film has received so much praise for its screenwriting, directorial and acting prowess.
If you see this film, you’ll will forget for a minute whether this is a glimpse of your own life or that of Lady Bird’s.
