SHE SAID | MOVIE REVIEW | LYNNMALLEntertainment

Compelling and enlightening is how “She Said” can be summed up. This movie is based on the true story which follows the journey of empowerment of women survivors exposing the widespread silencing of sexual assault in Hollywood by Harvey Weinstein and the New York Times journalists enabling their voices to be heard.

The cast depicting the characters are perfect. Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan portray the late nights, endless calls, and doggedly pursuit of the story in a way that brings the audience along the journey, the pain, hurt, and annoyances. Also starring some of the victims playing themselves brought about a reality of the subject matter.
Taking us out of our comfort zone into a topic that had been swept under the table for many years, this movie though confronting does not subject the audience to any visual form of sordid scenes, it isn’t needed, and the context is not lost. I am grateful for this.

As I was taken through the many conversations, late-night research, and fearful accounts relating to the perpetrator I found myself lost in their world. The cinematography had me searching them out in a crowd at times. This was a movie that I found captivating, showing the start of the “Me Too” movement, and left me pondering if this has been fully dealt with within the entertainment industry. The pace of the story telling was good.

For a re-enactment of a not-too-distant historical event, this would appeal to a wide variety of audiences.
Definitely a movie of our time, and a likely award winner. Don’t miss it!
