I love a psychological thriller and I love Chloe Grace Moretz, so I rushed to see Greta when it hit cinemas.

Greta follows sweet and naïve Frances (Moretz), who has just moved to the Big Apple from Boston. When Frances notices an abandoned handbag on the subway she picks it up. A kind and good-willed character, she becomes determined to return it to its rightful owner, who she finds to be Greta (Isabelle Huppert).

As soon as Frances stepped into Greta’s home I had a gut feeling something wasn’t right. Her house was eerie and lonely, just like her character. Despite this, her whimsical European accent and love for classical music gave an allure that sparked an interest by Frances. Having recently lost her mother, Frances quickly forms a relationship with the peculiar piano teacher.

The pair begin seeing each other every week, going for walks, cooking and learning about each other’s lives. But, as always, it was too good to be true and Greta’s charming persona quickly dissolves. She becomes possessive, obsessive and all things terrifying. Frances tries to pull away, but this only makes Greta more intense, bombarding her phone with texts and calls and showing up at her workplace. Frances’ roommate and best friend, Erica (who was suspicious of Greta from the beginning) says to her “The crazier they are, the harder they cling” which as you can imagine, is of no reassurance to Frances.

With the cops unable to intervene, Frances begins to wonder if Greta will ever stop harassing her. Erica convinces Frances to get out of the city and go on holiday with her father. She suggests that Frances tell Greta she is going away to ‘work on herself’ and that hopefully by the time she is back, Greta would have moved onto someone else. From here on, I found myself in complete shock at almost every scene. I can’t give away anything though; all I can say is that it’s startlingly intense and you’ll have to watch it for yourself to see what happens!

Greta was the star of the film. A presence so fantastically bonkers, she has an aura about her that spills crazy. Ballet twirling around the room after euthanizing a cop and stitching on her own pinkie finger are only some of the insane things she does (on top of drugging and kidnapping young naïve girls, of course).

Greta is a must see film that will have you on the edge of your seat. Grab your thriller-loving buddy and see it in cinemas now!
